On 16 October 2026 we requested 189 seller sites across 30 categories as a machine, then ran the same requests a procurement agent would run. Every line carries the observation it rests on, and the raw data is published so you can check any row yourself.
What we did, without the jargon. We sent your kind of website the same requests a piece of buying software sends. Then we sent the same requests through a normal browser, to be fair: if the browser got an answer and the software did not, that is a door closing, not a bug.
What we found. 94 of the 189 sites did not answer a machine at all. 40 refused outright, 27 answered with a page that is really a block or a "not found" placeholder behind code 200, and 27 never replied. One site in the panel publishes a real description file, and it still cannot quote a part.
Each bar is one check, across all 189 sites. Green is a site that passes, amber is where it only partly answers, red is a flat refusal. The right column is the same thing in plain words.
The pattern is not random. The checks almost everyone passes are the free ones: a sitemap, and being allowed in at all. Every check that requires a decision about machines fails across the whole industry at once, which makes this a decision problem rather than a technology problem.
Sorted from best to worst. Green means a machine can read the site and still cannot quote from it. Amber means the site does not answer a machine or answers it with a block. The spread runs from 7.4 down to 2.9, and 65 of the 189 share one score, 3.5.
The last column is the observation, not the interpretation. It is what the response actually contained.

How stable is this? We ran the same twelve checks over the same 189 sites three times on 16 October 2026. 185 of 189 answered identically every time. Four changed, and they are named here rather than hidden: anti-bot behaviour varies by hour, by country and by agent signature. At the level of the whole panel the headline moved by two sites, and the median score by four tenths, which is why we quote the range and repeat a run before naming a company in a proposal.

Anti-bot behaviour varies by agent signature, by country and by hour, so we repeat the run before naming a company in a proposal, and we state the limits of a single reading rather than dressing it up.
A scan tells you whether a machine is admitted. This tells you what it gets when it asks a question a buyer would ask: seven targets, seven real queries.

Four of seven refused the search path outright, one served a challenge, one returned a large page with no commercial data in it, and one did not answer. Zero of seven returned a price, a stock figure and a document together, which is the minimum an agent needs to place a line on a quote. This is also why no distributor is a ready-made target for us: the first conversation is always a diagnostic, never a proposal.
Named, because a score you cannot check is worth nothing: Hubbell (hubbell.com), audited on 16 October 2026 with the same twelve checks we run on this page, no API key and no downloaded price list. The shape of the problem is the one most manufacturers will recognise: a genuinely good machine surface in one corner, and nothing around it.
hubbell.com/sitemaps/sitemap_en.xml lists 1,792 URLs, so an agent can discover product pages and walk them. 92 of the 189 had nothing comparable.
The home page answers a machine with a 221 character placeholder, the product page we reached carried no Product markup, neither price nor stock was machine-readable, and robots.txt names five agents, none of them an AI agent.
A good sitemap, and an agent still cannot complete a purchase journey on it. Machine-readiness is not about being modern, it is about whether one set of questions has an answer.
Each domain was requested as a client with no browser fingerprints, then re-requested through a real browser session to separate a block from a rendering failure. Twelve signals were recorded per domain, plus an agent pass with a buyer's query against the search path and a product page. Runs came from a single network location in one afternoon.
One location, one moment, one signature. Blocks differ by country and by agent, so a 403 here is not proof of a permanent policy. Product markup can exist on pages we did not reach. The published scores are the honest record of a single reading, which is why the diagnostic we sell repeats the run and delivers the transcript rather than a number.
